Biography
Author TOM BERNARDIN, history
buff, preservationist, and avid collector of Statue of Liberty memorabilia, was a National
Park Service tour guide at Ellis Island for three seasons before the existing restoration.
His association with Ellis Island inspired him to write The Ellis Island Immigrant
Cookbook to try to capture and convey the immigrant experience, He settled on food as the
single, common thread that unified the 16 million distinctive souls that entered this
country through Ellis Island. Mr. Bernardin conducted a nationwide search for authentic
immigrant recipes that led to the publication of his book. He has since been heard on
National Public Radio and on television has appeared on the TV Food Network. Most recently
he was featured on Arts & Entertainment and The History Channel. In 1997, the book was
the winner of QVC's Best of Show award for New York State in their Quest For The Best
national tour with 5600 books sold in 6 minutes. He subsequently sold 12,000 books on QVC.
He follows an extensive
itinerary of personal appearances presenting his slide-lecture Ellis Island-The Golden
Door and attending book fairs throughout the United States.
Mr. Bernardin has recently
founded SAVE AMERICA'S CLOCKS (http://www.clocks.org/),
a not-for-profit group dedicated to locating, inventorying and assisting in the
preservation and maintenance of all of America's public clocks.
Originally from
Massacusetts, he graduated from Holy Cross College and now lives in New York City.
